Ingredients

  • 4 onions
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • Butter
  • Salt and pepper

Method

1. Preparing the Onions:

Cut both ends off the onions and then chop them in half. Peel off the paper skin and remove the first layer of the onion skin.

Place the onion halves flat-side down and slice them into approximately 1/8-inch wide slices.

2. Cooking the Onions:

Melt about 5 tablespoons of butter in a pan over medium heat. Ensure that the onions are separated and broken apart before placing them in the pan.

Add salt and pepper to taste and stir the onions continuously for about 20 minutes. If the onions start to stick to the pan, you can add a small amount of water to prevent burning.

The key to achieving perfectly caramelized onions is patience, so take your time and allow the onions to cook slowly.

3. Adding the Brown Sugar:

After approximately 20 minutes, continue cooking the onions for about 15 more minutes until they are soft and golden brown.

Add the brown sugar to the pan and stir it into the onions.

Cook the onions with the brown sugar for an additional 5 minutes, allowing the sugar to melt and further enhance the caramelization.

4. Finishing Touches:

Once the onions are browned and soft, they are ready to be used in your desired recipe.

Serve the caramelized onions as a side dish, topping for burgers or sandwiches, or as a flavorful addition to various dishes.

Enjoy the rich, sweet, and savory flavors of these delicious caramelized onions, which can add depth and complexity to a wide range of culinary creations.
